Hotel Pella

In both 2005 and 2006 we stayed at the Hotel Pella in Thessaloniki and were very pleased with the accommodations. At that time I believe we paid about 50 Euros for a double room with air conditioning and TV. Located at 63 Ionos Dragoumi Center, 546 30 Thessaloniki, the hotel is just 15 minutes from the harbor, and perhaps 10 minutes from Aristotle Square. Macedonia Airport is roughly 30-40 minutes distance by taxi/automobile, but the trip is a bit longer by intercity bus. We found the staff at this hotel to be friendly and helpful, and the location is in a neighborhood that offers numerous options in terms of cafes and restaurants. Getting to Hotel Pella from Macedonia Airport

When you arrive at the airport you obviously have two choices for ground transportation, a taxi, which should cost somewhere in the vicinity of 40 Euros, or an intercity bus, which costs perhaps 4 Euros. If you have the time and aren’t exhausted from travel the bus is clearly the preferred alternative from a price point of view. If you do decide to take a taxi, insist on being the only passenger(s) and, insist that the taxi driver use the meter in the car. If there is no meter, do NOT take that taxi, get a different one.

The taxi stand is located directly in front the main terminal, and buses leave from essentially the same place. To get to the city center, take bus #78 and ask the driver to let you know when the bus is about to reach Aristotle Square. Tickets can be purchased from the newspaper shop in the airport; be sure to validate your tickets once you get on the bus. For directions from Aristotle Square to either hotel, I recommend that you send an email to whatever hotel you’re booked in and ask them for specific walking instructions.

Recommended Archaeological Site in nearby Vergina

Some very good friends from the UK recommend that anyone going to Thessaloniki, who has even a small amount of time available, should make plans to visit the city of Vergina. According to my friends, Vergina has some  very interesting archaeological sites to see, most notably the tomb of Philip of Macedonia, which was excavated undisturbed so all the treasures were intact. Initially most were taken to Thessaloniki, but many have been returned Vergina and set up really well. Apparently there is amazing gold work, myrtle crowns and a quite a bit of Philip’s armor has been put together to conjure up the man. I’m told the best time to go is first thing in the morning as soon as it’s open (staying overnight, is good the place is sleepy, and the natives friendly) before the school trips begin to arrive. To reach Vergina you can either rent a car, or take a bus operated by a company called Imathia KTEL. You’ll have to go to the city of Veroia first and from there get on the local bus to Vergina.

Recommended Hotels in Volos – Hotel Phillipos and Hotel Jason

We stayed at the Hotel Phillipos one night in September of 2005. The price per night for a double room during 2010 was about 70 Euros. We found it to be a very comfortable place, with friendly staff, and a very convenient location about two blocks from the harbor where the hydrofoil boats leave for the Sporades Islands (including Alonnisos). It’s also probably about a mile or so from the main bus terminal if you’re arriving from (or returning to) Thessaloniki.

The hotel has 39 rooms with air conditioning, central heating, TV, a fridge, and an in-suite bathroom. To visit the Hotel Phillipos website, click here. To reach their Reservations page click here. To book a room via telephone call 30-24210-37607. Click here to read reviews of this hotel on TripAdvisor.com.

As an alternative to the above hotel, you can consider the Hotel Jason, which is located right on the Volos waterfront. We stayed there in August of 2009 for one night and found the accommodations to be basic, but comfortable and clean. If you do choose to book a night there, I recommend that you request a room towards the back of the hotel since it can get quite noisy at night if your room is near the front of the place. The location of this hotel is an advantage in that to get to your Flying Cat or Ferry to Alonnisos you simply have to cross the street. To book a room at this hotel on Booking.com, please click here. Recommended Hotel in Athens (Plaka District) – Adonis Hotel

During our trips to Greece in 2007, 2009, and 2010, we stayed at the Adonis Hotel, which is conveniently located in the famous Plaka district of the city. It has air conditioned rooms, and offers comfortable accommodations at a fairly reasonable price. We paid 85 Euros/night in September 2009 for a double-room. The price included continental breakfast served in a dining room on the top floor with a clear view of the Acropolis (picture below was shot from our balcony at the hotel). During September of 2019 we tried to book a room at the Adonis but they didn’t have any available; the quoted price was 100 Euros.

Since in our travels we view the hotel as simply a place to sleep, the lack of amenities found at more exclusive properties doesn’t concern us. If you feel the same, this hotel would probably be adequate for you, however, if you are accustomed to more upscale hotel rooms, there are of course better (and more expensive) options than the Adonis. If is the case then I suggest using Booking.com as a resource for finding alternative properties that meet your preferences. If the Adonis appeals to you, click here to visit the hotel’s website.

Getting to the Adonis

If you fly into Athens, you have three options for getting to this hotel. The first, and least expensive, is to take the E95 bus from the airport to Syntagma Square (approximately 4.0 Euros per person). You also can take the Metro train to the same destination for around 6 Euros. In either case, once you arrive at Syntagma Square, it’s about a 6 block walk to the Hotel Adonis. To get there, walk up Filellinon Street toward the Plaka and use the map on the left as your reference (right mouse-click on the map and save it to a program that you can adjust the size, then print it).

If you arrive at the airport and find that you prefer the speed and comfort of a taxi/limo, then by all means take advantage of the top quality transportation services offered by Elite Tours operated by our friend Spiros Halkides. He’ll be able to take you direct to the front door of the hotel and save you both time and effort.

Getting to Alonnisos through Thessaloniki

If you fly into Thessaloniki, the Seajets ferry company usually runs high-speed ferries from Thess to the Sporades islands (including Alonnisos). Those boats usually don’t start operating until sometime in June. If for whatever reason there isn’t an option to take a ferry to Alonnisos, then another option is to take a coach bus to the port of Volos where there are departures to the Sporades. If money isn’t an issue for you, there is also the option of hiring a taxi to take you to Volos (approximately 2.0 – 2.5 hours travel), and the price for that trip could be as high as 200 Euros or more.

There are typically 3 – 4 departures from Volos to the Sporades each day during the summer season, with the latest leaving sometime in the early evening. So it may be possible for you get to Alonnisos the same day if your bus from Thessaloniki arrives in Volos prior to that last boat departure of the day.

Once you get your luggage squared away at the Thessaloniki airport you’ll need to hail a taxi to take you to the KTEL bus station in the city. The airport in Thessaloniki is quite small all told, so finding the taxi line is quite simple. You just walk out the arrivals door and you’ll quickly spot the line of folks waiting. If the taxi driver speaks English, just tell him you need to go to the KTEL bus terminal to catch a long distance bus to Volos.

KTEL Bus Station in Thessaloniki

The KTEL bus station can be a bit confusing as there are numerous ticket counters. Look for the one that has the city of Volos listed. After buying your ticket(s), ask the counter person precisely what number departure area the bus will leave from as there are many buses in the barn-like structure. Once you have your tickets, be sure to proceed to the boarding area about ten minutes before departure. If you have a long wait and are interested in something to eat, there are some fast food places in the terminal that offer a pretty good selection of Greek food. Once you’re on the bus, you can figure it will take about two and half hours to reach Volos. When you arrive in Volos, please note that the bus station is just a few blocks from the departure pier for boats to Alonnisos, so if you take a taxi the fare should be inexpensive.

Making a Boat Reservation from Volos to Alonnisos

If you do intend to reach Alonnisos by boat from Volos, then prior to your trip you need to reserve and pay for boat tickets in advance. The Ferryscanner.com site is fairly easy to navigate, just choose your departure and arrival points and then follow the prompts. In the summer there are typically two (or perhaps three or four in high season) departures per day from Volos to the Sporades islands (including Alonnisos).

Staying in Volos

If the arrival time of your bus is such that you are unable to connect with the last boat of the day to Alonnisos, please check the Category Archives (to your right) under “Hotel in Volos” for information regarding the properties I recommend.
